Little info on Greater LA

Los Angeles is the second-largest city in the United States, the largest city in California, and one of the sister cities of Taipei.

Los Angeles has a dry and rainy climate, making it very suitable for living. In addition to transportation by sea and air, Los Angeles is mainly connected by highways, and residents generally use their own cars for transportation. Los Angeles is one of the major political and economic centers in the United States, attracting numerous talents. Countless Taiwanese compatriots have immigrated here, making it the largest gathering place for Taiwanese overseas.

Largest Taiwanese American community is in Greater Los Angeles

Due to the many excellent conditions in LA, Taiwanese Americans in Los Angeles have supported each other through decades of struggle and effort, contributing to the comfortable living conditions in California, which generates nearly two trillion US dollars in GDP annually. This support has also led to the formation of numerous different associations and overseas communities, serving the vast Taiwanese diaspora.

Taiwanese Americans, also known as Taiwanese Americans, refer to a group of American citizens and legal residents whose ancestors, parents, or themselves are from Taiwan and are a subgroup of Asian Americans. Over the years, Taiwanese Americans have played a crucial role in the civil diplomatic affairs of the United States with this unique identity.

With over two hundred thousand Taiwanese Americans settled in the Greater Los Angeles area, including Orange County and the neighboring major counties of Southern California, which accounts for over a third of the Taiwanese American population, Los Angeles is one of the traditional strongholds of Taiwanese Americans.

Due to the painful history of Taiwan’s democratic development and the high-pressure policies of the government at the time, many overseas Taiwanese intellectuals, influenced by their own local consciousness and desire for democratic reform, established associations abroad in the advanced and free United States. They connected with Taiwanese compatriots who shared similar ideals, forming a diaspora community centered around Taiwan’s interests, cultural traditions, and the rights of overseas Taiwanese. In 1970, the Formosan Club of America was founded.

Several major Taiwanese associations in the Greater Los Angeles area include the TAA-East San Gabriel Valley, the Northwest Taiwan Association, the SC South Bay TAA, the Orange County Taiwan Association(OCTA), and the Taiwanese Club Laguna Woods Village. There have also been associations such as the TAA Los Angeles  and the TAA West Los Angeles Chapter in the past. Based on suggestions from some members, the 5th president of the Formosan Club of America, Tony Chen, changed its English name to “Taiwanese Association of America.” From 1970 to 2014, three presidents of the Formosan Club of America served from Los Angeles: Ho-Rui Hsu (1972-74), MinLu Chai (1989-92), and Joseph Hung (1993-94).
